National League Trust's Day of Recognition - The Saints Community Project

Over the last 20 months football has played a vital part in helping communities cope with the stress of the pandemic. National League Clubs and their charities have been involved in many local initiatives to help alleviate the impact of lockdown and restrictions. They have continued to deliver activities and support partners through this difficult time. Over the weekend of the 12 to 14 November, the NLT and the League are celebrating their contribution.

At Brackley Town Football Club, we established the Saints Community Project, a group set up to support the elderly and vulnerable in our local community. Since it was established back in 2015, it has gone from strength to strength and regularly sees over 90 attendees each week.

Covid-19 meant that our regulars, who attended for company, friendships and to combat isolation, were more isolated than ever. We made sure to continue as many activities as possible, whilst also undertaking home visits and welfare calls throughout all the lockdowns and periods in-between.

In March 2020, we joined forces with Happy at Home and the South Northants Volunteer Bureau to ensure we could help with everything from prescription pick-ups and hospital appointments to shopping and Fareshare distribution of fresh fruit and veggies.

A few of our other endeavours included:

  • VE Day 75th Anniversary virtual tea party (with over 100 afternoon tea trays delivered to the local community)
  • A weekly luncheon service – a home-cooked meal delivered to homes once a week for 16 weeks
  • Distribution of PPE and masks to our elderly via care agencies, local shops and home delivery
  • Weekly socially-distanced meetings with support from local restaurants
  • The creation of The Brackley Elves – a group of volunteers who provided crafts, activities, Christmas cards and letters to each member

Living in a small town, we were incredibly fortunate to be able to coordinate efforts in our community easily. It wasn’t just for the elderly, also for anyone who was separated from their families during lockdown and travel restrictions.

The Saints Community Project continues to provide a safe space for anyone looking for friendship and fun. We pride ourselves on offering a warm and positive atmosphere, where everyone is welcome!

“We would like to thank Kim and all of her helpers for all the work they have done over the last few months. It’s so lovely to see them every week, to know we aren’t alone, and that they will help with anything. They also keep us well entertained with activities and ideas. All the beautiful, well-presented treats we receive really do bring a smile to our faces and help us to cope. Thank you so much to all involved.”
