Brackley Town 3-0 Bradford (PA) 26/1/19
Terrific Saints shrug off Park Avenue
Brackley extended their unbeaten run to seven games with a fine performance and deserved 3-0 win over Bradford (PA) who started the day in 3rd place. Carl Baker twice and Lee Ndlovu were the Saints goalscorers to move up into 6th place
Steve Drench got a hand at full stretch to divert Omari Sterling-James’ early effort but Baker set the home side on their way with a 25 yard shot beyond Drench in the 24th minute. Brackley threatened to increase the lead as Matt Lowe’s shot was saved and Jimmy Armson’s effort blocked.
It needed captain Gaz Dean’s saving tackle on the stroke of half-time however to deny Jake Beesley and send the sides into the break separated by the single goal.
The visitors rarely posed a danger to Danny Lewis in the Brackley goal in a second half dominated by Kevin Wilkin’s side. A superbly worked second goal on the hour with Baker and Shane Byrne combining on the left presented Ndlovu with a close range headed opportunity to record his 15th goal of the season in all competitions.
Baker fired in off the cross-bar in the 78th minute after fine work by Matt Lowe to record his second goal of the game on his home debut and seal a comfortable victory to narrow the gap between the two teams in the play-off places.
“It was a terrific performance today with three goals and the clean-sheet is a bonus,” Kevin Wilkin said. “Some new players have come in, some on loans, but we have worked hard. We have some players in the side who the young players can learn from and it will stand them in good stead when they eventually go back to their clubs. We are back in the play-off places but there is no doubt about it we should be further on than we are. We had a sticky spell before Christmas against some difficult teams and we certainly didn’t get the rub of the green and didn’t take our chances. We have to work hard on that and we do through the week to look at where we can all do better and how we can move forward as a group.”
