NEXT UP: BRACKLEY TOWN V CHESTER - VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NORTH

Chris Tymon12 Dec - 08:00

The Saints welcome Chester to St James Park this Saturday

Saturday’s visit to St James Park of Calum McIntyre’s Chester marks the approaching second half of the league season - it is the first “reverse fixture”, Saints having played at Chester in August winning through Connor Hall’s second half close range finish. Speaking after the game Gavin Cowan said, “Going in level at half-time was probably a fair reflection.

But in the second half we got into our patterns and on the balance of things it was a deserved win.” The two sides met twice last season with Saints winning at St James Park late in the season, Connor Hall (two) and Danny Newton on the score-sheet, Chester having gone ahead. The win extended Saints’ unbeaten run to eleven games and cemented a third placed finish in National League North. Chester won the midweek away game pre-Christmas through a penalty just before half-time on a night when Saints dominated but failed to find a clinical finish.

In the 2022-23 season the home side won in scorching August heat at the Deva Stadium, the sides drew in the New Year re-match at SJP while Saints won the play-off semi-final in May to progress to another Promotion Final through George Carline’s second half strike.
The sides have met 16 times in the league in total (the pandemic caused one postponement that was never played) with honours overall even on four wins each. In matches at St James Park draws have prevailed on no fewer than 5 occasions.

This season sees Chester currently in 7th place on 32 points after 19 games and on strong form of four games unbeaten including three wins. Home form has been outstanding while away from home the record is two wins from eight games to date.
Ahead of the midweek trip to Scarborough Gavin Cowan’s side is unbeaten in six league games with one defeat in ten. Only table-topping Curzon Ashton have a meaner defence across National League North, South and the National League.
