After an opening day win at home against newly promoted Scarborough Athletic Kevin Wilkin’s side face back-back tough away trips starting on Saturday with the fixture at Chester.
Chester finished last season in 16th place under Steve Watson. Home form was strong but just three away wins was their undoing. New manager Callum McIntyre will be looking to challenge higher up the National League North table this time around. Chester secured an away point in a 2-2 draw at Alfreton Town last Saturday.
Kevin Wilkin declared himself satisfied with the home win against Jonathan Greening’s Seadogs but expects the number of new signings to take some time to bed in and for the team to produce the performances he expects. Four players made their debuts in the starting line-up with Josh Flanagan also featuring for a first appearance off the bench. New signings George Carline and Callum Stead were both on the score-sheet in a new-look Saints side after so many departures in pre-season.
Shep Murombedzi was missing from Saturday’s line-up following injury in the pre-season friendly at Hemel Hempstead but there is good news as Shep’s recovery continues and he should soon be available for selection.
Last season the sides met at the Deva Stadium in February, a 1-1 draw the outcome as an injury-depleted Saints’ side secured a point through an added time own goal.
The game had been re-arranged after the initial fixture was postponed due to Covid regulations affecting crowd capacity in the unusual circumstances of Chester’s ground sitting partly in England and partly in Wales. When the reverse fixture came round in May the sides drew 0-0.
