Connor Hall’s 45th minute goal broke the deadlock of a scrappy, stop-start first half and put Saints in charge. Morgan Roberts doubled the lead on 63 minutes to seal an important away win.
“The lads’ attitude and application were incredible today and it was a well deserved win,” Cowan said. “They make it difficult for you and it was hard fought. We had a game plan to be direct and aggressive and the lads were excellent in what we asked them to do and what they actually did.”
Danny Newton and Morgan Roberts combined to set Hall away and, confronted by two defenders and keeper Peter Crook, Hall found the net at the second attempt to send his side into the break ahead.
Roberts’ superb effort left Crook rooted as his shot found the bottom corner from the edge of the penalty area. The visitors had opportunities to secure a more emphatic score-line as Danny Newton’s penalty kick was saved by Crook and Hall shot narrowly wide when through on goal as Sports rarely tested Maxted.
“We have been riddled with injuries and illness but the players are out there surpassing expectations,” Cowan continued. “So I am really pleased for them today and for the fans who have come out in numbers and have got what they deserved. A lot has gone against us in recent times so today’s win will create a lot of belief and confidence in the lads.”
