Marine are currently in their maiden season in the sixth tier of English Football, their highest ever in their 130 year history.
Gaining promotion from the Northern Premier League Premier Division, they finished 3rd and got promoted via the play-offs in a dramatic 2-1 victory against Macclesfield. Leading to their second promotion in three years.
Currently towards the bottom of the National League North, Marine will be looking to grab a second away victory of the season, with their first coming from a Brad Holmes double against Buxton. He will be the man to look out for, as the former Bolton and Blackpool youth player aims to prove himself at this level for the first time.
The Merseyside outfit famously would get to the FA Cup 3rd round where they drew Premier League giants Tottenham, the game however would end in a 5-0 defeat. Their historic run, the best since 1929 would provide them with a substantial amount of funds. Where they raised over £300,000 in funds via virtual tickets.
The Man in Charge:
Neil Young has been the man in charge at Marine since 2018 and has now enjoyed an impressive seven promotions during his managerial career including last seasons dramatic promotion at Macclesfield.
Young had been relegated with Marine in 2019 but sceptically was kept in charge. Fans of The Mariners were rewarded for that loyalty when he led them back to the Northern Premier League Premier Division in 2022.
Previously boss at Stockport County and Altrincham, Young was at the spearhead of three league titles during his time at Chester.
Young was also Head of Scouting at FC Halifax Town for a short time and took temporary charge of the First Team in 2018 before landing his current role at Marine.
Key Players:
At the back, Marine utilise Tom Atcheson, a promising young centre half on loan from Blackburn Rovers. At 17, Tom would receive an u21s call-up for Northern Ireland. Atcheson plays alongside another international, the Maltese fullback James Brown. Brown won the Scottish Cup and League Cup double in 2021 while at St Johnstone.
Leading the line is Zambian born Chanka Zimba, who rose through the ranks at Cardiff City’s academy before a successful loan at Maidenhead United which would turn permanent over the summer. Zimba would score on his debut last weekend in their 3-2 defeat to Stockton Town in the FA Cup Second qualifying round.
