George Carline’s headed goal was ultimately the deciding moment of the match as Saints recorded back to back home wins while Peterborough lost on the road for the first time since early November.
Alfie Bates’ perfectly placed deep corner kick was headed in by Carline giving ‘keeper Peter Crook no chance to put Saints deservedly in front on the hour mark and Gavin Cowan’s side kept a first clean sheet in five games to claim an important win.
“Peterborough are a tough team to beat and we are thankful to come away with the three points,” Cowan said. “We had plenty of opportunities to score and George [Carline] scored with a great header. We restricted them to few opportunities. I am really pleased with the players today but we could have managed the game a bit better towards the end.”
Brackley could not convert a series of goal chances in a one -sided first half while home ‘keeper Jonny Maxted was untroubled. Vanarama Player of the Month Connor Hall was almost on the score-sheet again in just the third minute as Peter Crook foiled the Brackley striker at the last before Matt Lowe was twice thwarted when through on goal.
It was Lowe who reached the by-line and crossed for Alfie Bates’ shot to hit a defender’s arm but the penalty appeal was waved away as the half ended goal-less with Sports edging into the game.
A more evenly contested second half saw the lively Michael Gyasi and Max Booth begin to pose a threat to Maxted’s goal without creating clear-cut chances. Dangerously positioned free-kicks were twice wasted by the visitors as Brackley held on to garner three precious points that keeps them in third place and in contention in and around the play-off places while Sports slip to 13th.
