Brackley Town 1-0 Northampton Town 23 July 2019
Saints overcome Cobblers in entertaining pre-season match
On a sweltering evening at St James Park, Brackley deservedly beat county neighbours Northampton Town. The Saints enjoyed more of the chances in a performance that was much more up-tempo compared to Saturday’s disappointing goalless draw against Banbury.
Early on Northampton twice hit the bar in close succession before Trialist Jake Weaver saved a half volley from Ex Stockport County man Matty Warburton.
Lee Ndlovu’s superbly turned Goode before forcing Arnold into a diving save before a forceful driving run from Matty Lowe ended with his shot whistling just over the bar. With Brackley’s speed and pace troubling the visitors, Jimmy Armson’s fierce shot was deflected over the bar for a corner.
The second half started as the first half ended with Ndlovu again losing his marker before picking out Carl Baker, but a defender denied him with a last-ditch intervention.
Frenchman Thierry Audel replaced Kelvin Langmead – who was playing against his old club – before several more changes from both sides came on the hour. With Tendai Dare partnering Dan Holman in attack, they neatly combined to score the only goal of the game on 71 minutes when Daire prodded home from close range.
Daire almost added a second 6 minutes later but he lifted Connor Franklins fine cross over the bar from inside the 6-yard box. Ellis Myles almost doubled Brackley’s lead when he hit the woodwork 3 minutes from time.
Brackley have one more game before the league season starts when they visit Southern Premier League side Stratford Town next Saturday.
Brackley Town: Weaver, Myles, Franklin, Byrne, Langmead (Audel 56), Dean, Lowe, Murombedzi, Ndlovu (Holman 60), Armson (Fairlamb 60), Baker (Daire 60).
