Brackley Town 2-0 AFC Rushden & Diamonds 12 Sept 2020
Stunning strikes seal home win
Two superb second half goals earned Saints a comfortable win in the third pre-season warm-up game at a warm and sunny St James Park.
With several players missing Kevin Wilkin used four triallists and changed formation at the break as the first competitive match of the new season draws another week nearer.
Saints should have been ahead inside the first minute, Matt Lowe’s 20th minute strike was well saved and Jimmy Armson’s shot was rising as it grazed the cross-bar as the sides went in level. Diamonds fielded former Brackley players Luke Fairlamb and Lorrell Smith and Smith produced the visitors’ best chance, his shot just off target in a well contested first period.
The second half belonged to the home side and was won by Ellis Myles’ stunning strike after 70 minutes, the ball struck sweetly from distance. Armson’s volley finished off a beautifully worked opening ten minutes later to double the score.
“Sometimes it takes a great finish to break the deadlock and good players find these moments,” Wilkin said. “It was another good work-out this afternoon. It is an unusual pre-season this year of course having had a mini-pre-season already. We have two more games to come and that’s about right with more sessions in between. We have one or two injuries at the moment but nothing to be too concerned about.”
Starting XI: Lewis, Miles, Franklin, Armson, Walker, Dean, Lowe, Murombedzi, York, Triallist, Triallist.
