Brackley Town 2-2 Curzon Ashton 10 Oct 2020
Saints are sunk late
Two late penalties converted by Dominic Knowles saw Curzon Ashton stage a come-back at St James Park to earn a valuable away point.
For the visitors it was the Knowles show as the striker latched onto a loose ball but was high with his shot before Saints went ahead through Jimmy Armson midway through the first half. The goal came from a messy build-up but was well finished by Armson and the lead was then doubled on 37 minutes through Shep Murombedzi’s superbly struck free-kick.
The home side enjoyed chances to put the result beyond doubt hitting the woodwork twice through Matt Lowe and substitute Tre Mitford before the visitors took full advantage.
Knowles struck first from the penalty spot on 77 minutes after an offence in a goalmouth melee and the Curzon striker added his third goal of the season on 86 minutes as Brackley were penalised again for an offence in the penalty area.
Level at 2-2 both sides pushed for the winner. Knowles’ header struck the bar in added time and Saints’ Harry Flowers’ effort from Shane Byrne’s free-kick was saved as both sides had the chance to win it. Points shared it was Steve Cunningham’s Curzon side who departed happy with a point hard earned leaving Kevin Wilkin’s Saints frustrated at points dropped.
“It is disappointing when you look at how comfortable we were in the game,” Wilkin said. “We were two goals to the good and creating chances but to end up as it has is something that all our players need to take on board and understand and find that little bit of game understanding. As a group everyone needs to understand what it takes to be successful in a game. We need to sharpen ourselves up.”
