Brackley Town 3-2  Gloucester City    28 Dec 2020

Saints silence leaders’ roar

Saints scored late against runaway league leaders Gloucester City to record a fourth successive league win and jump four places to 8th in the final action of 2020.  Two goals from Shane Byrne and a 7th goal of the season for Lee Ndlovu deservedly claimed the points in a tight game of few clear cut chances.

Chesterfield  0-0  Brackley Town     19 Dec 2020

(Chesterfield won 4-3 on penalties)

Saints fall in dramatic shoot-out

Brackley’s involvement in the FA Trophy ended in a penalty shoot-out at National League Chesterfield after a spirited and battling performance.

“With the results they have had lately we knew it would be tough, but we grew into the game second half and I think we had the best chance of the game with Ndlovu, “Kevin Wilkin said.  “It could have swung our way but the belief that the players showed to keep going after they’ve been a little bit under the cosh.  We could have gotten ourselves into a better position in the penalties but we just didn’t quite see it through.”

Penned in during a first half dominated by The Spireites, Saints grew in confidence through the second period and enjoyed good moments with Lee Ndlovu’s header from Jimmy Armson’s cross in the 90th minute an opportunity to have edged through.

Danny Lewis was called into action as the home side peppered his goal with shots from distance but the defence stood firm and as the second half wore on Chesterfield rather ran out of ideas.  Lewis made a fine stop from Liam Mandeville when through one on one and it was the Brackley keeper who was so nearly the hero of the sudden death shoot-out after 90 minutes plus 5 added minutes of stale-mate.

Lewis saved two of the first three penalties, Jimmy Armson putting Saints ahead after three spot-kicks before Chesterfield converted three successive penalties as Saints missed with two to send The Spireites through to the fourth round.

Brackley Town 3-2  Royston Town    16 Dec 2020

Saints through in exciting cup tie

Brackley progressed to the 3rd round of the FA Trophy with a midweek win over Step 3 Royston Town in an exciting game of goals and attacking play at both ends.

“We knew it would be a tough game,” Kevin Wilkin said.  “They have good players in their team and play open and expansive football.  Credit to them because they made a real game of it.  Overall I felt we deserved the win.  We had the better chances and the better moments and we are delighted to be through.”

Ashley Chambers put his side into a first minute lead heading in smartly from Shane Byrne’s near post corner and it was Byrne who doubled the lead on 17 minutes through a deflected shot.

Royston hit back to reduce the deficit on 22 minutes as Brandon Adams produced a sharp finish after Taylor Parr’s long through ball.

Chances at both ends failed to alter the score-line at the break but The Crows were level on 47 minutes as Spyros Mentis made no mistake in punishing lax defending.

Within five minutes Saints were ahead again as Chambers got his second goal of the game scrambling the ball over the line after good work by Wes York.  Keeper Joe Welch saved brilliantly from Shep Murombedzi’s fierce effort and the ever willing Tre Mitford stung the hands of Welch late on as Saints saw out the final moments to set up a trip to National League Chesterfield on Saturday.

Brackley Town  2-1  Blyth Spartans  12 Dec 2020

Saints record third successive win

Blyth were unable to halt a five game losing streak while Saints recorded a third successive win in a game that rarely hit the heights.

All of the goals came in the first half.  Kevin Wilkin’s side took a 6th minute lead when Shane Byrne converted a penalty after a clumsy foul on Jordan Cullinane-Liburd.  But Blyth found the equaliser following lax defending on 20 minutes, JJ O’Donnell finishing smartly from close range.
