Brackley Town 4-1 Corby Town Tues 13 July 2021
Saints and The Steelmen played out an entertaining and competitive pre-season game in the first fixture at St James Park since February in front of an appreciative shirt-sleeved crowd. This was the first tie in the inaugural Newlands Shield and honours went to the home side after a storming second half performance.
Gary Mills brought a large squad for Corby’s second friendly fixture while Kevin Wilkin fielded new signings Louis Lomas and Brad Holt alongside three triallists.
A closely fought first half saw the sides level at the break courtesy of two fine goals. First Triallist 1 broke through to finish with aplomb on the half hour to put Saints ahead before Jordan O’Brien’s sharp effort equalised for Corby.
The second period belonged to the National League North side creating plentiful chances and rattling in three fine goals. On 65 minutes Brad Rolt got off the mark finishing sweetly after strong work and a first time cross by Matt Lowe. Triallist 1 extended the lead ten minutes later with an excellent finish low to the goalkeeper’s right and completed a hat-trick on 80 minutes rounding the prone ‘keeper and finding the net from the tightest of angles.
“It was a useful first run out and good to see some sharp finishing in front of goal,” Wilkin said. “The Newlands Shield is a good innovation and perhaps added an extra edge to the game.”
