Brackley Town  1-1  King’s Lynn Town    13/8/19

Added time frustration for Saints

A dramatic finale of two added time penalties denied Brackley a second home win of the season after an assured performance that deserved better.

Saints dominated the game but were unable to break the first half deadlock, an early goal ruled out for off-side, keeper Alex Street denying Glenn Walker after excellent work by Lee Ndlovu and three times Jimmy Armson close to giving his side the lead.  King’s Lynn enjoyed possession but rarely threatened although Ryan Fryatt tested Danny Lewis midway through the half bringing a fine save from Brackley’s keeper.

But the break-through goal just before the hour mark was worth waiting for.  Lee Ndlovu’s strike was hit with such venom it fizzed past Street from 20 yards to open the striker’s account for the season.  Saints created chances to extend the lead but could but convert them to open up a two goal lead.

Deep into added time The Linnets’ first incursion into Saints’ six yard box saw the referee award a penalty for hand-ball.  Adam Marriott coolly scored to level the scores with just moments remaining in an unlikely turnaround.  But Saints went up the other end where Ndlovu was up-ended setting up a second penalty kick.  Shane Byrne’s spot kick struck only the cross-bar and with no time remaining for the goal-kick the referee’s whistle signalled a sickening conclusion to a game the home team somehow contrived not to win.

“We played better this evening and begin to look more cohesive.  We created chances and Lee, who was outstanding, scored a very good goal to put us ahead,” Kevin Wilkin said.  “It is obviously frustrating the way the game finished.  We couldn’t get the second goal we needed but in all honesty I didn’t feel from where I was that either penalty was actually a penalty.  King’s Lynn are a good team and there were lots of positives from our performance this evening but ultimately we have lost two points we should have picked up.”
