AFC Telford 0-1 Brackley Town 4 Jan 2020
Saints win again on the road
An impressive performance earned an important away win to maintain Saints’ push for the top. Lee Ndlovu’s tenth goal in eight league games put Kevin Wilkin’s side on the road to victory but, with a second goal proving elusive, determined defending was needed to secure the points in an exciting finale.
“The way the players passed and moved the ball today was exceptional,” Wilkin said. “We didn’t get that two goal cushion, so had to defend near the end but I can’t speak too highly of my team this afternoon. We were in control of the game and it is a thoroughly deserved win. It was a fantastic header by Lee and a terrific goal for us.”
Telford rarely threatened Danny Lewis in the Brackley goal but the keeper was called into action early in the game, diving bravely at the feet of two attackers. Lee Ndlovu was twice thwarted after good play by Matt Lowe before Saints made the break-through their dominance deserved, Lee Ndlovu’s fine header on 33 minutes into the net off the post from Ellis Myles’ inch perfect cross after Saints broke from their own half, Shane Byrne finding Jimmy Armson who linked up with Myles in a goal of great quality.
Glenn Walker was close to doubling the lead before half-time, keeper Matt Yates saving well at close quarters. Brackley spurned a further opportunity to increase the lead as Armson was bundled over bearing down on goal, Byrne’s 50th minute penalty kept out by the legs of Yates, as Saints’ spot-kick woes continued.
Telford rallied late searching for an equaliser but Brackley’s defence, marshalled by captain Gaz Dean, held firm despite six minutes of added time.
“This is an honest bunch of players and the attitude has been fantastic,” Wilkin added. “We need everybody to stay fit and suspension free as it’s a small squad if we are to continue this run of form. Nobody is getting carried away. The teams around us keep winning so it is about picking points up along the way and let’s see where that takes us.”
