Brackley Town 3-2 Gloucester City 28 Dec 2020
Saints silence leaders’ roar
Saints scored late against runaway league leaders Gloucester City to record a fourth successive league win and jump four places to 8th in the final action of 2020. Two goals from Shane Byrne and a 7th goal of the season for Lee Ndlovu deservedly claimed the points in a tight game of few clear cut chances.
“It was a strong all-round performance, a terrific result and we’re delighted to come through and win the game,” Kevin Wilkin said. “They are a good side and have some good players who will test you. My one criticism from our side today was that we really should have put the game to bed with the moments we had in the second half. But Gloucester got themselves back into it so fair play to them and it looked like they might take a share of the spoils. But we kept going and scored the goal late on.”
Ash Chambers’ early effort was cleared off the line but it was The Tigers who went ahead on 24 minutes as Kevin Dawson neatly lobbed the out-rushing Danny Lewis. When Wes York was felled in a clumsy challenge the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot and Byrne expertly despatched his spot-kick to level on the half hour.
Saints finished the half on top and went into the break with the lead. Jimmy Armson met Byrne’s 44th minute corner kick firing goalwards and in the melee Lee Ndlovu scrambled the ball into the net.
Ndlovu was twice thwarted in the early stages after the re-start and substitute Tre Mitford hit the post before the visitors found the equaliser with a first attack of the half on 72 minutes, top scorer Matt McClure finishing smartly for his 11th league goal of the season.
Matt Lowe fired just wide, Ethan Coleman’s header brought keeper Rhys Lovett into action and Saints’ fierce appeals for a handball and second penalty of the afternoon were waved away as the home side pressed for the winner. It came on 88 minutes as Ndlovu and Myles combined and Byrne was on hand to bundle the ball over the line.
