Daire to Dream
Tendai Daire was perhaps the surprise Summer signing for Kevin Wilkin’s squad but he has made an impact and talks here with The Red and White.
If every interview with Tendai Daire is to be like this one then we have a lot to look forward to. He is relaxed, articulate and full of fun. It is with obvious delight and rare enthusiasm that Tendai speaks about his move to St James Park and the welcome he has found from his new team-mates.
“Everything is different coming here from Lutterworth Town,” he says. “I have learned a lot already and everyone has really tried to help me settle in. So far so good, though of course I’d like to get more minutes on the pitch. The standard and the intensity is obviously higher and I have learned a lot about this level of football. I have still to adapt myself because it’s difficult.”
After four seasons at Lutterworth in which he enjoyed three promotions he is not shy to talk about his scoring exploits. “I scored over 50 goals in every season and just grew with the team really. Mind you I started out as a centre back then a right back at Oadby Town and then played in midfield at Lutterworth before converting to striker. So to score so freely was a shock to me also!”
Tendai burst into the headlines for Saints in the Senior Cup game at ON Chenecks with four goals to announce himself properly at Brackley. “I set myself targets to score goals and at Chenecks it was my first start. Going into the game I tried to make a statement to say I am still around and still here. It is hard for the manager to pick the eleven players to be fair but he has talked to me and been nothing but supportive of me since I came. He gives the reasons for selection decisions and that’s good and how it should be. To get the four goals was nice of course. I came off because I said to the gaffer “I’ve scored enough!” ” And with that his laughter, bubbling away throughout our conversation, turns to more of a roar! “No, actually I had a niggly injury so that was why,” he explains with a broad grin.
When we get on to talking about his new team-mates Tendai has plenty to say, most of it complimentary until he gets to the car pool arrangements. “I share with Connor, Ellis and Lee”, he says. “It works well with Lee and me the DJ’s. Our choice of music is great. Connor and Ellis weren’t so keen but they are getting into it now.” He gives a special mention for something called Skeleton Move although when this is later mentioned in conversation with the others their reaction is quite different!
“I am loving it here,” he says which is a good moment to break off. Something suggests we will be hearing a lot more from Tendai Daire.
