A much needed and comfortable win for Saints over a young Holmer Green side that conceded early goals and were then up against it as Saints confidence increased measurably as the game progressed.

Saints took the lead on 3 minutes when Matt Hammond pounced on an unfortunate ricochet in the Holmer Green box and clinically shot past Tom Bryant and into the far corner. 2 minutes later Matt Hammond turned provider playing Lewis Gabbidon into the left side of the penalty box and he calmly lifted the ball over the keeper and into the far corner of the goal.

Saints were dominating possession with Holmer Green looking to sit back and defend. On 20 minutes James Hammond broke free in midfield and chipped a clever ball through to Alex Stott who fired into the top corner to extend Saints lead.

On 31 minutes Ryan Knight showed great chest control bringing the ball down and striking a curling drive just over the bar.

Holmer Green were hanging on and right on half time the referee ignored very strong appeals for a Saints penalty when the defender appeared to stop a powerful header on the line with his arm.

The second half started more evenly with Holmer Green suggesting that they could be dangerous from set plays. Even so Matt Crowther in the Saints goal was not troubled.

But on 59 minutes James Hammond picked up the ball 40 yards from goal, drove at the penalty box and from 30 yards expertly curled the ball round Bryant and into the net.

For the next 20 minutes Saints became a bit sloppy with possession and were perhaps guilty of overplaying at times but on 79 minutes substitute George Ball broke free and calmly slotted in Saints 5th.

On 85 minutes Holmer Green created their best chance of the game when a great free kick was headed agonisingly inches past the Saints post with Crowther beaten. Crushingly Saints broke immediately and another substitute joined the party when Ethan Dowse won the ball just inside the left edge  of the penalty area, and although his first attempt was well saved he was like a terrier winning the rebound and firing powerfully past Bryant.

The scoring was completed in the last minute when Ryan Knight picked up a loose back pass to roll the ball past the keeper and to complete a thoroughly miserable night for the away team.

Much respect to Holmer Green who battled bravely but it was not their night. Well done Saints. Seven different goal scorers and plenty of possession and some really nicely worked goals. Onwards and upwards....
