An early season local derby played on a good playing surface, but with neither side really ably to find the quality to break down 2 solid defences. The early stages saw both teams create chances with Saints coming close from a corner after 3 minutes followed by a dribble full of tricks from George Ball bringing a fine save from the home keeper Jake Pritchard.

A victory to secure a fantastic 3rd place finish was the task facing Saints on a glorious sunny day with St James Park looking excellent. Saints did not hang about and took the lead on 4 minutes when a Lewis Baldwin free kick was headed down by Ollie Goddard to Ryan Knight who swivelled and struck his 25th goal of the season. Saints nearly repeated the trick on 14 minutes this time Goddard seized on a loose ball after a corner and struck his left foot shot just wide of the post.

Wantage 0 Saints 0

On a tense evening at Alfredian Park both teams had all to play for. If Wantage were victorious they would be league champions and if Saints won it would leave the door open for them to challenge for the title in the last round of matches. A draw didn’t really suit anybody

Saints were unchanged from their weekend victory over the league leaders Brinscombe and almost had a fantastic start when James Hammond took advantage of some poor defending and burst into the box and struck a powerful shot across the keeper but his shot rattled back off of the post.

Lewis Baldwin then tried his luck from the half way line having spotted the keeper off his line but his shot drifted wide.

Saints were coping well with Wantage’s direct style but needed Joe Ward to be alert after Ali Worby had needed to rush out of his goal to head clear but only to Nick Thorne whose goal bound attempt was intercepted by a Ward header with Ali Worby on hand to pounce on the loose ball.

On 31 minutes there were loud appeals for a Wantage penalty but the referee decided that Stephen Robertson went down a little too easily under a challenge from Ward.

The half ended with a spate of Wantage bookings for dissent and the second half began scrappily with play hindered by the bobbly pitch.

On 65 minutes both teams created good chances within a minute of each other. Firstly Wantage broke rapidly with Robertson flashing a left foot drive past the post. Saints then put together a great passing move that saw Kille break into the box but he could not get the ball out of his feet to shoot.

Saints were pressing and on 77 minutes Ryan Knight nicely controlled a pass from James Watts, turned and his right foot shot squeezed just past the post.

On 85 minutes Knight’s cross deceived everybody including Curtis Meare in the Wantage goal but the ball skimmed across the crossbar and out to safety.

Wantage were straight back up the other end and from a corner a powerful Chris Jackson header was brilliantly saved by Ali Worby.

Well into added time a trademark Saints break down the left involving Brock, Hammond and Watts resulted in Watts breaking free into the left side of the box but he was undone by a last second bobble and his cross drifted behind for a goal kick.

So a draw and a result that really didn’t suit either team. However for Saints a positive battling performance against a physically strong Wantage side.

That leaves Saints with a final match on Easter Monday versus Lydney Town at St James Park - 3pm KO. Please come and support the lads and show your appreciation for what has been an outstanding season.

Brackley Town Saints (2) Brimscombe & Thrupp (1)

Saints: Worby, Middleton, Brock, Baldwin, Ward, Goddard, Ball (G), Watts, Knight, Hammond, Kille (Godfrey 80)

Subs not used: Whitmore, Haley, Swann, Ball (S)

In the words of Barry Davies Interesting…..very interesting!!!

This was a cracking game and a deserved victory for Saints against the team in second place at the start of the day. With the other two teams in the top four failing to pick up points in their games the race for the title is wide open and could go down to the wire.

The early exchanges saw BTFC take the upper hand without really troubling Ali Worby who dealt comfortably with a couple of corners and crosses. At the other end George Ball wriggled free just outside the BTFC box but his shot was wide of the far post. On 18 minutes Saints took the lead with a lovely one touch move down the right wing which resulted in James Watts pulling the ball back to James Hammond whose first time shot was deflected by Ryan Knight past the helpless Ashley Gale in the BTFC goal.
